What is edging and can it make you last longer in bed?

If you are someone who feels tired after an orgasm, it’s time to fire things up with edging. Excited to know more? Read on! Have you felt that you lose interest in sex after an orgasm? As women, we are believed to have multiple orgasms, but it doesn’t always happen. Well, like always, we have a solution to your problem. Yes, this time we are going to speak about edging. You may wonder what this really means, right? It is also referred to as surfing, teasing, peaking or teasing. What you essentially do is stop yourself from reaching an orgasm, when you are about to. Hence, the name.

Here’s the simplest way of edging:

When you go solo:

  1. Turn on some dim lights, use a diffuser and make your environment nice and cosy. 
  2. Start touching yourself until your vagina gets wet. 
  3. Start masturbating by stimulating your clitoris. 
  4. When you are about to cum, stop stimulating. 
  5. Start focusing on what makes you excited, and any changes in your body. 
  6. Touch yourself again. 
  7. Repeat this several times, until you are ready to orgasm. 

When you do it with a partner:

  1. Indulge in foreplay or different positions with your partner.
  2. Try oral sex on them, whatever makes them going.
  3. Tell them cues when you are about to cum.
  4. At this point, stop all kinds of stimulation, until you go back to a plateau.
  5. Ask your partner to start stimulation again, when you are ready to orgasm.

  • Teaches you more about your body and sexual needs
  • It makes your sexual appetite last much longer because it eliminates the refractory period post an orgasm

Although it has become increasingly popular over the last few years, research reveals that this technique has been in use for more than half a century. It was primarily used for premature ejaculation. In 1956, a paper published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, James H Semans, highlighted the ‘stop-start’ methods, so that people last longer before reaching an orgasm. 

What you need to know about orgasms

We all know experimentation is essential to spice up your sex life, but edging also helps you understand your body better, thereby making you more aware of your sexual responses. 

There are four stages of arousal: 

  1. Excitement: In this stage, your skin begins to flush, muscles get tense, and the blood flows quickly to your clitoris or vagina.
  2. Plateau: Things get more intense, as you inch closer to an orgasm. It is at this point that you can decide to stop or further stimulate. 
  3. Orgasm: This is marked by a feeling of ecstacy, which manifests in the form of increased lubrication in the vagina. But if you decide to go for edging, you want to stop this. 
  4. Resolution: This is a stage post orgasm, when tissues return to their non-aroused state. Let’s say this is when the refractory period begins, when you can’t get aroused again. It can last up to a few hours or even a few days.
