Hair fall concerns have become rampant in the post Covid-19 era. If you are troubled by it too, try these expert-recommended Ayurveda tips.

Life in the 21st century has become easier with all the technological advancements. At the same time, we are facing more illnesses because of the sedentary lifestyle and hectic schedules that mess with internal homeostasis. The number of people suffering from hair fall has dramatically increased in the last decade. Hair fall is a new epidemic among many people across age groups between 20 to 50 years. Hair diseases are increasing very abruptly due to faulty dietary habits, lifestyle, and stressful living.

It is normal to lose 50-100 hair strands a day, but if you see any more than this it means that there is an underlying health issue that is causing this. Having long, beautiful, and voluminous hair is considered the most appealing element.

Ayurveda is an ancient holistic system of medicine that is more than just a lifestyle medicine. It teaches a person to lead a healthy life by being more in sync with the internal and external environment. Ayurveda considers hair as by product of healthy Asthi dhatu (bone tissue) inside our body. The health of Asthi dhatu is dependent upon good digestion and the Dosha balance inside the body. Some of the factors that could lead to hair fall are outlined below.

Causes of hair fall
  • Poor diet which lacks essential nutrients
  • Lack of sleep and high amounts of stress
  • Excessive consumption of spicy, sour, and salty foods
  • Excessive consumption of salt, irregular mealtime, skipping breakfast, and lack of nutrition to the body
  • Excessive exposure to environmental factors like smoke, sunlight, and mist also affects hair health
  • Due to all these causes, Pitta dosha aggravates with Vata and other doshas and weakens up the hair root leading to hair fall

1. Oiling the scalp with coconut-based hair oil

Head is one of the trimarmas as per Ayurveda. Applying oil on your head is an everyday practice that improves the functioning of all the sense organs in your head. Oiling your hair provides nourishment to the hair follicles and gives strength to the cortex. Using coconut-based hair oil for massaging hair protects it, acts as a conditioner, and enhances blood circulation in the head and neck. As we learned earlier, hair is a by-product of Asthi dhatu and massaging oil on your hair is considered as one of the ways to strengthen the hair by increasing blood circulation and stimulating growth of roma koopas (hair follicle). Due to its unctuous and cooling properties, head massage with coconut-based hair oil balances Pitta and Vata, thereby balancing both the doshas. Coconut-based hair oil is rich in MCTs and has lauric acid to improve hair and scalp health. That is how it repairs damaged hair and aids in the growth of new hair, making it an effective hair fall treatment

2. Nasal drops

Instilling medicated oil or ghee as a part of daily routine helps in hair fall reduction and accelerates new hair growth. Nasal drops nourish the scalp and strengthen the hair. Nasya stimulates the hair follicles to grow new hair.

3. Washing your hair

One should always check the temperature of the water before having a head bath. Ayurveda says that one should not use warm water over the head as it reduces hair and eyes strength. Always use comfortably cold water to wash your hair. Avoid chemical-based shampoos which irritate your hair and further damage it.

4. Protect your head

Wear a cap/ turban or use an umbrella in case of excess wind, sun rays, rain, and dust to protect from environmental factors.

5. Healthy diet and exercise

Incorporate whole grains, leafy vegetables, fruits, and proteins into your diet. Regular intake of nuts like almonds can improve the essential nutrients like Zinc and Biotin which are considered vital for our hair growth. They are considered as one of the best foods to boost Ojas as per Ayurveda. Ojas is the vital strength that enhances your overall well-being and protects you from illnesses.

Eating food that is cooked fresh can enhance the absorption of all the nutrients. It also boosts your jataragni which in turn help with proper formation of all the tissue systems including Asthi dhatu.

Exercise helps in keeping your hormones in balance and aids in circulation. Simple yoga poses like Balasana, Adho mukha svanasana and Vajrasana are recommended.

Stress has become part of modern life; it affects both our physical and mental health. My go-to stress busters include warm coconut-based skin and hair oil application followed by shoulders and head massage, taking a walk in the park and spending time off social media. If your stress is extreme, speak to a professional who can help with that.

7. Chemical Products

Regular use of chemical-based hair products can affect hair health and damage your hair roots. Try to avoid harmful chemical treatments and hot ironing to keep your hair as healthy as possible.

8.Shiro Abhyanga, Shiro Pichu

Ayurvedic treatments like Shiro Abhyanga and Shiro Pichu with hair-friendly herbs and coconut-based hair oils are beneficial to reduce excess heat in the head.

By changing your diet, lifestyle and incorporating simple Ayurvedic practices and hair fall remedies like oiling your hair regularly; it is possible to reverse hair fall naturally!
